The Final Step

Standing at the edge of the roof, he could see his breath dissipate into the night sky. He slid the letter into a crisp envelope like sheathing a knife and sealed it. The envelope would always remain in his hand. He peered down at the cold asphalt thirty floors below as the howling winds thrashed the trees’ bare, lifeless limbs. He marveled that his plan was falling into place and this last murder would create a ripple effect to the discovery of countless bodies.

His name would be set in stone.

He stepped forward when he heard the approaching sirens.

Note: I made it to the second round of the NYC Midnight's 100-Word Microfiction Challenge 2020! My second assignment was Horror, sealing an envelope, and I had to use the word "ripple". The above story was my second entry I made on 6/27.
